going for the lab date

I`m not so very motivated. Learning is quite hard. I had the time, that i could not configure the easiest things. I was confused about setting up frame-relay dlci`s. But this time has gone. I still have about some weeks to go. My lab date is not booked yet. My company was giving me about a week for learning so far. Will see how this will be in the next weeks. I will be in the office next week in at a customers site the week after. From the workload it should be possible to have 1 or two days extra for learning. But i will see.

I got also extra online rack time sponsored for my favorite racks provider. Seems like everything is working fine, but the devil is in the detail always. 🙂 I just apprechiate the next weeks. Will get some day`s off at the beginning of may definitely. Spring is about to come and for me this is the nicest season of the year. Do some bicycling for now. Have a great day too.

VTP version 2 and vtp messages regardless domain name

This should work, but is i labbed it out, it does not as promised. Let`s say if you have a vtp domain CISCO and one switch, that is configured in transparent mode, does belong to another domain, does not forward, these vtp messages. If you have this one switch in between the others, your vlan database will not be updated because of this domain mismatch.

This should work with vtp version 2, but does not, is i tried it today on my rack with 3560 cat switches. For vtp version 1 this behavior is normal.

Done my written again on tuesday morning this week

Had a lot work this week but managed to make the written again.

New i can shedule my lab date again. I will try to get a date in april, maybe at around the 17th or 18th of april.
I hope i can get a date. If someone want to reshedule his date with me, please just leave me a message.
From now on i can lab it out. I will still go for dynamips and do reseach of different technologies. Then at the weekends i will do real labs. Maybe later on, i will be able to do some labs weeksdays for whole days. I will depend on my employer. Would be really valuable if i could get a week or two for labbing. We will see how things work out.
I`m really motivated to get this thing home.

CCIE Written 350-001

Will do my new Written in February. My test from 8/2006 is no longer valid for the Lab. I hope i can get a Lab date in march still. Must have some luck though. The CCIE Written is only valid for a year after you have done your last lab attempt.

About to take the lab in february/march next year

Currently i wake up a 4 in the morning and start learning until 7:30, than go to work. I spend the whole last week at the customers site. I got sick and now i hope the next week will get better.

Currently i can work quite good with dynamips. I did labs 4.1 version 3 from ie. I`m now at lab 8.

I found that i really also need to do some sports. I started badminton again and i will try to do some wall climbing. My first try was not that bad and i think this could be a sport that i will like.

Next year i will also start to do online labs with rented racks. I will do this on each weekend Sat/Sun for about 5 hours. I need also my time to recover from learning and i thinks it`s difficult enough if you have a job. I will see how much my new company will support me on my CCIE. Still have to recert for the CCIE Written.

ACE design / implementation / GNU

Most difficult thing is to implement the device into the customer network. This needs a lot of planning and discussions about the design and how it should be implemented.

The logic is, that you will mostly try to implement the ACE in between. From one VLAN into the other. The ACE will provide for VIP and VLAN interfaces to be the gateway for traffic back to the clients. Even bypassing the ACE is possible. This should be planned before and it should be clear at what point the device will be implemented.  It might be a good idea to have a good look at grown network struktures. While implementing the ACE it all depends on good understanding of te traffic flow and the current network infrastructure. The best is to communicate possible problems and catches.

dynamips performance on suse linux

As i started to configure some labs now, i recognized that my new laptop with dual core 2,1 Mhz (3GB )is not enough for 14 virtual machines.

In the beginning everything is fine. When you fire up all devices first, you get a load about 5-10 percent. Which is really nice. Most devices have not really much configured. But as you add more configurations, the load starts to get higher. When i start to add BGP the load is getting to high for one machine. Even i got the best idlepc value for my machine, the neighbors got flapping and it`s getting unusable.

I read about each router is equipped with a cpu with about 400 Mhz each. That make`s 5,6 Ghz for 14 machines. So a single duo core machine can`t handle the load, when all routers are at cpu limts.

You can get a quad core machine, which for me is not possible, as i travel a lot and must have a notebook with me. So i can not do some things with one notebook. And if i have a second one,  i can split between two notebooks. I configured the BB`s on one and routers and switches on the other. That should already help a lot. So

I will update my blog, when i have more experience regarding load sharing. It`s still great to work with dynamips. Thanks to the author one more. 🙂

I planning to to my next attempt in february or march next year. Good luck anyone else attempting it maybe even this year in december.

dynamips training

I went back home by train yesterday from berlin and was able to do some labbing with dynamips. On my 6 hours journey i started with lab 3 from internetworkexpert workbook 3 v4.1. It took quite some time to setup everything to start. You have to change the interface types (FastEthernet to Ethernet or Serial0/0 to Serial1/0 for example) from the startup-configs. But everything went fine. I let ospf/eigrp/rip run all over the devices.

I’m using „konsole“ from KDE with tabbing feature. So i can easily switch between the routers by holding down „Shift“+“Left“ or „Right“. So you don’t need to switch with the mouse back and forth.

And i got to know a nice blog here where there is a collection of other ccie candidates also writing about their progress. Please have a look at:
