IPS and java versions

After i tried three different java versions, i managed to login to my ips 4215. I tried java versions:

j2re-1_4_2_19-windows-i586-p.exe

jre-6u12-windows-i586-p-s.exe

jre-6u13-windows-i586-p-s.exe

With these versions the login got stuck at loading 92% of the configuration from the machine. Just told me “Initializing Config Modules” and got stuck at 92%.

Then the last version i tried did the trick.

jre-6u7-windows-i586-p-s.exe

Works for the https login.

What the hell? First the ASDM fiasco with java and now the IPS. In each case, jre 6u7 fixes it but to date no one I know has said why the newer javas are breaking Cisco java-based software.

    Hi Dan,

this is always something, what i ask myself. Java is a great idea. To make code independent from the OS platform. But i have had also these problems with ASDM (logfile realtime analysis) for eample. Sometimes there is not enough performance, or things got stuck. I like ASA, but this is something i wish that would be better. Still idea is great. But i can’t open the IPS login from my ubuntu box.

I use a Mac to access all my java-based Cisco interfaces. It always works and performance is usually great.
